Tom Luong: The Stock Navigators Founder
Tom Luong was born in Vietnam. Unfortunately, Tom lost a million dollars in the .com crash but managed to learn and recover from this by basically not letting other people manage his money.
Tom made the mistake of hiring an investment advisor right before the .com bubble back in 2000.
Tom Luong arrived in the USA with almost nothing after fleeing Vietnam in the middle of the night. It’s quite the crazy story with him arriving in the USA without any money or really speaking any English.
The free webinar sales presentation is performed by Tim Luong (Tom’s son). I can only assume that is because Tim comes across better in terms of having a typical American accent etc.
He claims to be a successful trader after learning from his father.
Tom managed to get a system engineering job in San Francisco! All from hard work.
He succeeded with trading because he developed a strategy that works by basically working extremely hard. He spent years learning and studying before he made his own strategy.
Tom has over 20 years of trading experience and founded Stock Navigators in 2018.
What is Stock Navigators?
Stock Navigators is a company that sells a stock trading educational program. They have over 20 team members.
You can get more information on what they have to offer here. I would write more about this but it changes frequently and you are most likely to get accurate information from them directly.
They seem to have a lot of positive reviews both video testimonials and on TrustPilot.
You need to ‘apply’ to join these programs. This involves a 45-minute free call with one of their team members. They help you to come up with a trading plan for free.
The courses take many weeks to complete. You can start as a beginner and progress through to their exact strategy. You get to speak to all the students and mentors in a Discord server. It seems like a pretty useful room.
There are also live Q&A calls where you can submit your questions beforehand.

What Do They Teach?
The free webinar I first attended focused on simple technical analysis. They talked about trading with the trend using higher highs and high lows then discussed one of the simple Fibonacci key levels.
Obviously, this is just a free webinar but there was nothing very helpful for me in this webinar. Very basic technical analysis. Maybe useful for beginners though!
The courses take an average of 3 months to complete.
Some evidence of Tom’s success is show in the form of screenshots like the one below.
Which is great. But, at the end of the day it’s just a spreadsheet and not any kind of verified brokerage statement. There is no ‘proof’ that this guy makes money consistently.
The Stock Navigator program teaches day trading, swing trading and longer term investing. They are constantly updating the material as market conditions change.

Here is a brief high level overview of what to expect from the Stock Navigators course. I will go into more detail in the next few sections of this Stock Navigator review about the course content.
Week 1: Setting up and giving you a foundation to help kick off your trading journey.

Week 3: Initial technical analysis.
Week 4: Advanced concepts that make a difference in your trading.
Week 5: The 3 paths. Helping you to understand what type of trader you want to be.

Stock Navigators Review: Who Teaches the Course?
The course starts with a brief intro from Tim and Tom. However, when the material starts it’s a guy called Brian that starts teaching. There isn’t any real introduction to who Brian is and what his qualifications are. He also sounds a little bored when doing the introduction.
The introduction starts with Brian discussing what you will need to do to be successful and how to work through the course. He makes sure that the new student knows this will be hard and to keep going despite this.
Brian vanishes after doing a couple of modules and is replaced with a guy called Jonathon. He sounds more interested.
Stock Navigators Review: Course Content
In this section I will give you an in-depth look at what you can expect from this course. I will cover the Expert Trader program in this review. It is their main and most expensive program.
The Expert Trader program includes:
- COURSEWORK: Six modules that cover everything you need to know from the basic foundations, to advanced analytical methods, strategy, and psychology/mindset. It’s 60 hours of pre-recorded video that they recommend you learn at a pace of 10 hours per week for 6 weeks, but you can learn at your own pace.
- TOM’S TRADING ROOM: Tom opens up his trading room virtually every weekday morning, 15 minutes before the market opens. He analyzes the market and several stocks, demonstrating how he trades live! You are reading this correctly – you get to trade with Tom live (virtually)! Seeing him in action while going through the coursework is an accelerated way to learn.
- WEEKLY Q&A Tom conducts weekly Q&A sessions to answer questions students have about the course material. Its a lively, interactive discussion where students ask questions and get answers.
- STUDENT COMMUNITY a student community of traders who are dedicated and committed to success. It’s an encouraging, supportive, and highly engaged group. This part is special because trading can be isolating.
- PRACTICE ON A SIMULATOR: Tom’s method includes practicing on a simulator to demonstrate that you can trade consistently profitably for at least 3 weeks before you start putting his methods to work in the real market.

Week 1
Brian gives an introduction and talks about motivation and what to expect from the course. Week one has about 2 hours of learning from video lessons.

OUR STORY: Tim uses Tom’s story about how he became successful and pursuing the American Dream to motivate students. He talks about his story and his Dads. Lot’s of discussion about ‘success’ and what it means.
A NEW BEGINNING: Motivation!
SETTING YOUR FOUNDATIONS: Jonathon takes over. A very comprehensive overview of trading and why it is hard (Dunning-Krugger effect). This covers the very basics to the history of trading brokers, to what shares are to how to buy/sell. Interestingly there is a significant section introducing Futures trading in this part of the course. Risk management, analysis (fundamental and technical),
READING CHARTS: Charting methods, technical indicators, reading the markets, understanding trends and reacting to the markets. The basics of candlestick charts are covered. Things like pivot points, support, resistance and buy zone. This is quite good and comprehensive.
TRADING SETUP: Computer selection etc.
TRADING PLATORMS: They discuss and recommend two different trading platforms to use. They walk you through these two different platforms and how to set them up.
Tom does a section in this module as well where he tells his story to motivate students. They preach changing your mindset – something I am a big believer in.

Week 2
This was a boring week for me. I can see how it might be helpful to brand new traders though.
ThinkorSwim Active Trader: An hour long lesson on how to setup and use TOS Active Trader. While this would be helpful for new traders it was useless to me.
Trading from Canada: I’m not sure why there is a 40 minute session aimed only at traders from Canada. But there is! It seems helpful if you are wanting to trade US stocks in Canada though. Some of it is presented by Tom himself – the first time I’ve heard him in this course.
Drawing in ThinkorSwim: How to use Thinkorswim. Talks about paper trading, adding indicators, drawing lines on your chart and then Fibonacci extension tools. I did learn a little bit about using ThinkorSwim in this module even though I’ve used it for a year or so. Focused on what you need and not a lot more which is good.
Drawing in TradeStation: Same as with TOS above but in TradeStation.
Week 3
This is where the real meat of the course begins. The first couple of weeks are just intro stuff and almost useless to anyone that has experience with ThinkorSwim.
Stock Navigators use Dow Theory in all of their trading which is why this week kicks off with this.
Dow Theory: 1 hour of information on Dow Theory. Very interesting! I learned a lot from this module. How to identify trend changes is covered very well and I did learn some interesting things in this module.
Support and Resistance (including a live demo): Interesting ‘proprietary’ way to draw support from Tim. This is really useful. Covers trend lines, support, resistance and how to use them in your trading for entries and exits. They also cover moving averages as well. They give which moving averages they like the best. The live demo is just a walk through of a few charts looking back – not a live trade.
Pattern Recognition: Technical patterns, basic price patterns and continuation patterns. I was already familiar with everything in this section (about 100 minutes of video).
Multiple Timeframe Analysis: How to setup and watch multiple time frames and why this is important.
Buy and Sell Zones (including a live demo): I did find the details of the ‘Buy zone’ interesting and fairly unique. Seems like a good simple strategy. Good job on the real life examples. They encourage you to work on spotting these zones and post them in the Facebook group for feedback.
Confidence in Action: Motivational mindset module. Difference between confidence and greed.

Week 4
This is where things get much more in-depth. Here is an overview video.
Fibonacci extensions: Goes over Fib retracements and extensions. Builds on the Dow Theory from last week. Emphasis is on combining them with buy/sell zones etc. How to know if the dip is done dipping. TradeStation example is given. They do a great job in this section. Several hours of video.
Indicators: Walks you through the exact indicators they use on ThinkorSwim. Emphasis is on combination of indicators. This is pretty cool. Covers indicators on TOS and TradeStation.
Price Action: Presented by someone else….price action vs indicators. Simple candle sticks nothing new or exciting. Some nice examples though of people trading based solely on price action.

Elliot Wave Theory: Wave theory, wave counts and Fibonacci rules. Brief history and how Dow Theory and Elliot Wave works together. Covers impulsive waves and corrective waves. Covers lots of tips and tricks to minimize complexity. How to draw it on your charts.
Renko charts: Explains what these are and why you might want to use these for day trading. How to avoid mistakes with Renko charts. How to set them up in TOS and Tradestation. I hadn’t heard of Renko charts…..covers all the different types of Renko charts. Use Dow Theory with Renko charts and put everything together. This is complicated! There is over an hour of setting these up in TOS and how to trade them. This is great but it’s really getting complicated combining everything.
The CCI Indicator: Module taught by Abhi. The CCI indicator is a momentum indicator. Helps spot strong trends in the market. How quickly price accelerates away from 20 period SMA. Covers why it is better than RSI indicator. Shows you how to add this in TOS. This is added to everything else we have learned (e.g. Elliot Wave Theory).

Week 5
Day Trading: Useful information about upcoming events that might effect your day trades. Things like Fed speeches etc. Recommended number of trades a day, picking the best setup. Max amount of time trading. It goes over the multi-time frame strategy and what conditions much be met with the different indicators to dictate a trade and to manage it. Gives you a full detailed check list for day trading.
Swing Trading: Similar but for swing trading.
Long Term Investing: Nothing useful in here for me.
Risk management: An hour long lecture on risk management about following rules in detail. Nine points on risk management. Very good!
Scanning for Opportunities: How to use Finviz.
Week 6
Wrapping it all up.
Stock Navigators Review: Cost
The 45-minute application call is the only way to find out how much this will cost. There is a REASON they make you ‘apply’ to join. This doesn’t leave the best taste in my mouth – hard closing sales calls without letting you know the cost before you schedule.
You find out how much they are likely to want after you successfully apply. This varies due to demand…..you will need to contact them to discuss this.
I will say this though.
In my opinion what they charge is A LOT for what is essentially in my opinion a basic trading education.

Tom Luong Stock Navigators Review: Conclusions
Stock Navigators does seem to be a legit education program. The mentors are helpful, supportive and the courses are very highly rated. The owners seem to be legitimate traders and like to keep things simple.
I like Tom’s story and they only seem to emphasize making side income money and seem to give realistic expectations.
The price (which you will find out when you call them…..) is in my opinion on the high side.
I found the lectures to be clear, informative, and easy to follow.
I appreciated being able to re-watch and review the lessons at my own speed.
Tom’s daily videos and coaching gave me the confidence to trade the markets! The Stock Navigators Support Staff is always ready to assist and make sure any/all concerns are addressed.

Hi, I just had a call with one of the strategist and I got to say, I felt pressured to sign up for the course and he seemed quite rude. He wanted to close the sales and sounded disappointed when I wanted to think about it. I felt like he used my answers from what he asked me in the beginning of the call to use against me. I felt disrespected as if I have to justify myself why I needed to think about it. Thought he was unprofessional and I shouldn’t be obligated to sign up at the end of the call. The cost is $7,800!!!! I heard the cost was only $4,500 back in 2020 and then $6000 in 2021. That’s too much of an increase within 2-3 years time frame.
I’m glad I ran into your review and thank you for this! I looked through the 6 weeks description of the lessons and I already know most of it which would not justify the $7,800! I don’t see much is covered in strategies of day/swing trading? That’s what I really wanted to do as I already know the theories and also like you mentioned we don’t really need all those indicators on week 4.
Hi Vanessa, thanks for the feedback. That has always been my main issue with these guys. The course is good but it’s too expensive by probably 10x in my opinion. Still, with aggressive phone sales they manage to get their asking price but I’ve yet to meet someone that thought it was fairly priced.

So far I haven’t read anyone mentioned $7,800 that I was given? I wonder if that sales guy was trying to rip me off? Lol.
Also, someone mentioned if Tom the owner, who can’t even speak proper English and can learn things on his own, why can’t any decent human being with a college degree and intelligence do so? With all the resources right now, it’s highly achievable. Again, I’m so thankful to see the syllabus you reviewed as the sales guy did not go through that with me. Can’t imagine paying $7,800 for a theory I can just google if needed. I think their non transparency policy on the costs did not build trust. And their high pressure sales tactics is unprofessional for a company who preaches about helping students to learn.
Yup, they seem to have gone down the high-ticket route which means they have to do the high-pressure phone closing etc. It’s very difficult to sell something this expensive without that approach. I’m very surprised people pay it lol but its very hard to say ‘no’ on these types of calls which is why they work so well.
Russell, having completed the course now…. has it helped you earn more in the stock market with their techniques?
No, I never use their methods because in my opinion they aren’t any better than any other technical analysis strategy out there really.
I paid the $7800 and I think it was worth every penny. Ive taken other courses and this is NOT just any other technical analysis strategy, there is risk management and feedback in case you need help understanding any of it. If you follow it COMPLETELY, your probability of successful trades should increase significantly. its a complete deep dive on every aspect of a specific set of strategies combined. Knowing what I know now after having completed the course, id pay for it again. If you are struggling to successfully trade the markets, you would be doing yourself a HUGE favor by investing into this. Im glad I did….it pointed out what I was doing to consistently lose out on trades. It made it invaluable to me.
